Maybe this story happened a long time ago. Or maybe not. Who knows. It doesn't make much difference.
This is the story of a little child, just tall enough to stand on his own two feet. His family was very poor. The three of them lived somewhere in Pyr, in a very, very small apartment.
The parents worked at harvesting shooki. Every day they had to travel, depending on the season, to the Oasis or across the Canyon to the Sawdust Mines. They were very discreet, simple homins. Since they couldn't afford to pay for a babysitter, they took their little one with them most of the time.
And one fine day...
Actually, no, it was not a good day. What do you think...
It was a day. Just a day. A terrifying day.
That day, the couple was attacked by bandits, who kidnapped their child. And all their harvest of the day. The parents returned to Pyr, to seek help, spoke to the corporal, who decided to send some homins to look for the child. Without much hope. Desperate, they returned to their apartment. And there, surprise, the little one came out of the door, safe and sound, before their eyes! By what a miracle... Thanks be to the Kamis, they said, who probably brought back their child!
They ran to warn the corporal, who had his soldiers called back, not without believing that these patriots had made fun of him... Too much shookie, no doubt.
A few days later, on their way back from harvesting, the couple was attacked again. Were they the same bandits? The story will not tell. But they took the child. It seems that a second hand child can be wellsold, just between us. The couple ran to Pyr, and again, the surprise: the child came out of the door of the apartment. And needless to say, the story repeated itself several times. Never again did they warn the corporal.
It must be said that when they saw the bandits, they put down their crop, put the child on top of it, and ran to Pyr at full speed. And the child was always there, back at the apartment.
Some time later, they decided that their child was old enough to attend the Fyros Imperial School. They went to the Academy to register him, followed by their child.
And the official, astonished, answered them:
“But of which child do you speak?”
“Ours!”
The official looked at the two fyros, then studied his register for a moment...
“I want to help you, but there is no child with you.”
The parents turned around, and the child... had... vanished.
It is told...
It is told that from that moment on, the child only appeared to them in their dreams, covered in scars and blood. And the parents slowly fell into madness, the madness of not having been able to see the truth.
It is waiting for its time. It is waiting for your time.
