Some plants have shown signs of intelligence, finding ways to communicate with other thinking species. From there to knowing if their message is peaceful or malicious, it's up to you to find out...

However, the eight botanical families listed below should help you to find your way through the teeming flora of Atys.

The wonderful flora of Atys

This section lists the flora of Atys as it appears to the laymen homin. Note that many of this 'flora' isn't even really plants, but actually fungi or even immobile animals. But you'd have to dabble in botany a bit before you realise this.

The flora you may run into varies immensely based on the ecosystem of the continent you're in. Only a few plants appear in multiple ecosystems (like the Olansi tree that appears in both desert and lakelands). Thus the flora is classified by ecosystem.

Named alewo in olden times, this tree of disheveled appearance is from the same family as the arinish. The jayazeng produces a white, viscous sap which has elastic properties when dry and is used by Zoraïs. Its bark and foliage are highly flammable.

The story says that Sorrow^* saw one day an ambassadress of the Karavan talking alone in front of one of these trees. Wanting to know what she was saying, he approached in silence, and was able to distinguish the words “Jaya Zeng”. Unfortunately, he stepped on a twig and the ambassadress heard him, stopping her conversation with the plant. Supplice then got closer and asked what “Jaya Zeng” meant. The ambassadress pointed to the tree, then disappeared. Remembering that the Karavan knew more than homins, he decided that it should be the true name of the tree, and since then Zoraïs call it so.

Matis, expert botanists, did the same when learning of this, while Fyros and Trykers contented themselves with giving it the name they were taught.

It is said that praying in front of one of these trees attracts the eye of the Karavan.

An older belief called it the “tree of misfortune” but the wiser homins remember that it had to be interpreted in the positive sense: by meditating in front of it, one can lay down one's misfortunes, hence its appearance.

*↑ Sorrow is a zoraï Sage who has the strange gift (or curse) of being able to feel what Atys feels, especially its suffering. He is also known as Supplice — that name being more common today.
